How to Build the Perfect NFL Roster

Which positions to draft first, which eras produce the strongest teams, and how to actually go 17-0.

Only the 1972 Miami Dolphins ever finished an NFL season undefeated — 17 wins, 0 losses. 17-0 is a draft game that asks you to do the same: spin for a random franchise and era, pick one legend, fill 10 positions, and simulate a full 17-game season.

The math is brutal. A team built around five 99-rated players still only goes 17-0 about 2% of the time. Your decisions genuinely matter. Here's how to tilt the odds.

Quick answer: Lock your QB first when possible. A 99-rated QB raises your win probability more than any other single position. Fill EDGE and DT early — defensive pressure is underrated in the simulation. Then grab the best skill-position player available regardless of era.

The 10-Position Roster

You draft exactly one player at each of these positions, in a randomized order:

Draft Priority: What to Take When

Round 1–3: Lock the non-negotiables

The simulation weights QB rating heavily. If you spin a team with a 99-rated QB available — Joe Montana's 49ers, Tom Brady's Patriots, Patrick Mahomes's Chiefs — take him. Every other decision becomes easier with an elite quarterback anchoring your score.

If the spin gives you a defensive powerhouse instead (Lawrence Taylor's Giants, Bruce Smith's Bills, Reggie White's Packers), take the 99-rated EDGE or DT without hesitation. Defensive pressure forces turnovers that swing the simulation in your favor.

Round 4–7: Fill the skill positions

Running backs and wide receivers spike your offense's scoring output. Jerry Rice (SF, 1980s–90s, rating 99) and Barry Sanders (DET, 1990s, rating 98) are the two most impactful skill-position players in the database. If either spins up, take them regardless of what other positions you still need.

Round 8–10: Take the best player available

By the final three picks, you're filling whatever positions remain. Don't force a mediocre player at a needed position over a better player at a filled one — the simulation averages your roster rating, and a 75-rated player drags the whole team down.

Use respins wisely. You get 2 per game. Don't respin a spin that gave you a 95+ player just because you wanted a different position. Save respins for spins with no player above 85 at any position.

How the Simulation Works

When you simulate a 17-game regular season plus four playoff rounds, the engine calculates three things and combines them into a single team strength score.

Weighted average rating — not all positions count equally. QB has the highest weight (2.5×). EDGE and OL are next. LB and S weigh least. A 99-rated QB lifts your team more than a 99-rated safety.

Chemistry bonus — if your QB and at least one of your WR or TE are from the same franchise and the same era, each matching pass-catcher adds +2 to your team strength (maximum +6). Joe Montana + Jerry Rice + Brent Jones, all 1980s San Francisco, earns the full +6. Montana paired with Tyreek Hill earns nothing — they never played together, and the simulation knows it. This is the single most underrated factor in the game. A well-built era-coherent offense beats a collection of superstars who never shared a field.

Weak-link penalty — your lowest-rated player is a significant liability. Below 85 rating: steep penalty (1.5 points deducted per point below 85). Between 85 and 90: mild penalty. Above 90: no penalty. Real opponents target the weakest link; the simulation does too.

Why your team of Hall-of-Famers might not go 17-0: Cross-era, cross-team rosters earn zero chemistry and often carry a weak-link penalty if any position is below 90. The 1972 Dolphins didn't have the best players at every position. They had the right system, real chemistry, and got fortunate at key moments. That's what 17-0 requires.

Deterministic results — your result is stamped to your exact 10-player combination. Swap any one player and your result changes. Build the identical roster and you get the identical record. This is not a random roll — it's your specific team's outcome.

Playoff gauntlet — the four playoff rounds are progressively harder. Each round reduces your win probability by 3% (opponents are better-prepared, games are on neutral sites). A team needs at least 9 regular-season wins to qualify for the playoffs.

The 17-0 threshold — even the strongest possible roster (maximum ratings, full chemistry, no weak links) goes 17-0 only about 1–2% of the time. The 2007 New England Patriots were considered the greatest team ever assembled, went 16-0, and lost the championship. Perfection is rare by design.

Pro Scout mode hides all ratings and accolades during the draft. You can only see player names, teams, and eras. It's dramatically harder — but if you truly know ball, you don't need the stats.

Common Mistakes

Reaching for a position you need over a better player. If you need a TE and the spin gives you a 78-rated TE or a 99-rated RB, take the RB. The position gap costs less than the rating gap.

Ignoring EDGE rushers. Pass rushers are consistently undervalued. A 99-rated Lawrence Taylor or Reggie White contributes more to winning than a 95-rated WR because defensive pressure forces turnovers that directly convert to points in the simulation.

Burning respins too early. A respin on round 2 that saves you from an 80-rated player might come at the cost of having no respin on round 9 when you get a 70-rated backup. Save at least one respin for the final three rounds.
